Additional frequently asked questions about mosquitoes & ticks

The ideal time to treat mosquitoes and ticks differs based on their life cycle. Mosquito treatments typically occur from May through September. We generally recommend treating for ticks in spring (April, May) and fall (September, October). Treating at these times catches ticks at the beginning of their life cycle and prevents them from being an issue throughout the rest of the season.* *NOTE: Ticks can still be carried into your yard and dropped off by animals.

Mosquitoes can be more than just irritating with their persistent buzzing and biting. In most cases, mosquito bites cause mild to severe itching. They are, however, known carriers of diseases. They transmit numerous diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue, and encephalitis. These diseases can be deadly to you, your family, and your guests if infected and left untreated. Limiting your exposure to mosquito bites is the best protection against these diseases.

The bite of a black-legged tick (better known as a deer tick) causes the most significant concern. The black-legged tick is a carrier of Lyme disease and numerous other tick-borne illnesses that can result in severe long-term neurological problems if left untreated.

Although there are do-it-yourself products available on the market, they are often effective for only a few days or provide minimal control. In addition, store-bought products can be potentially harmful to you or your family if they are not mixed according to the label or if they are misapplied.

There are some steps that you can take in combination with professional help to control the population:

  • Keep your lawn mowed to a height below 3 inches
  • Remove wood piles or other structures that may provide shelter
  • Reduce available breeding grounds by removing stagnant water from buckets, flower pot dishes, bird baths, etc.
  • Wear light-colored clothing
  • Cover up exposed skin with long clothing
  • Refrain from using sodium or fluorescent lights that attract mosquitoes at night
  • Apply an EPA approved mosquito repellent when you’re outside, especially at dusk
  • Clean clogged gutters and keep them clean throughout the season
